COVID-19 Response Statement

March 13, 2020
For Immediate Release: San Diego, CA

Dear Friends and Families of Urban Surf 4 Kids,

For the past 10 years, Urban Surf 4 Kids has striven to provide a safe space for children and youth to experience the trans-formative power of the ocean through our strong family of volunteers and support from the communities we serve. Together, with your help, we create an Ohana for children and youth overcoming the affects of complex trauma in an effort to provide healing. Additionally, we are strong advocates of encouraging a healthy lifestyle; physically, nutritionally, emotionally, mentally and through life choices.

We are all experiencing an unprecedented event with the recent news of the World Health Organization declaring a pandemic earlier this week due to the spread of COVID-19. To help minimize the spread of the virus, we will be taking the following actions:

What We Are Doing

1. We are cancelling all Hanai Mentoring Program Outings until further notice.
2. We are postponing our Uncorked Wine Festival from March 28th to June 20th.
3. We are cancelling our Spring Pre-Season Surf Camps scheduled in March.
4. We are monitoring the situation for our April 19th Pre-Season Surf camp until further notice.

Additionally, we are following the guidelines of our state and county government agencies and the California Department of Public Health. We strongly encourage the everyday preventative actions to help prevent the spread of Covid-19 and other respiratory diseases:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick until you’ve been free of fever for 24 hours.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Wash your hands often with soap for at least 20 seconds.

If you have a fever, cough or other symptom associated with COVID-19, or if you believe you may have been exposed to COVID-19, you should isolate and not attend any Urban Surf 4 Kids events. People who think they have been exposed to COVID-19 should contact their healthcare provider immediately.

A Healthy Ohana

The health and well-being of our families and volunteers is very important to us and a matter that we take very seriously. We send our love and gratitude to all of our nurses, health care providers, first responders and every day heroes who are working to contain and care for the sick and vulnerable, (which includes members of our own Health Care Advisory Board and Board of Directors).

In the meantime, we will continue working hard on all of our programs (including new fun collaborations) and we will launch online campaigns to stay connected to our community of supporters. We are eager to reconnect with all of our kiddos and look forward to seeing them again soon. Please follow us on social media for updates, giveaways and more.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at Roxanne@US4K.org.

With sincere gratitude,

Roxanne Avant
