2023 Stories of Stoke: Meet Scott, 2023 Hanai Co-lead!
Hey everyone! I’m Scott, I have been involved with Urban Surf for over 3 years as a Hanai lead, co-lead, mentor, and surf camp volunteer.
Over half a decade ago, I saw the Urban Surf flags at the beach, looked them up online and thought, “That’s cool, an organization based around surfing and hanging out.” Unfortunately, it took me a few years to get involved. In 2018, I finally decided to join a surf camp, which led me to want a bigger commitment with the organization. That same year, I decided to join the 7-month mentorship program.
As a surfer and someone that enjoys the water, it was a natural fit for me to want to share positive experiences in and around the water with teenage boys who have limited opportunities to make it to the beach. As a high school teacher, I’m always stoked to witness faces of accomplishment and empowerment. The fun I had spending time with these boys was just an added bonus.
A favorite memory: In July, our Hanai group had the opportunity to sail on a million dollar yacht (Wholly molly!) in San Diego Bay. We sailed around and under the Coronado bridge and were able to witness all the scenic views of downtown from the water. Our teenage boys who have never experienced anything of this sort were all smiles. Many stated they have never in their life experienced as much peace and relaxation as they had that day on Steve’s yacht. This day was exceptionally memorable since our entire group (participants and mentors alike) were able to escape from the complications and stresses of everyday life and enjoy being in the present moment.
I’m looking forward to another year of mentoring influential young men with US4K.
