2022 update for Hanai mentors

As a dedicated volunteer of Urban Surf 4 Kids, you understand the importance of keeping children safe. To ensure the safety of our youth to the fullest extent possible, Urban Surf 4 kids will be implementing the following requirements for new and repeating mentors in our 2022 Hanai Program:

-required Trauma training for all mentors and leaders

-completion of CA Mandated Reporter Training

-Knowledge in basic water safety

-proof of vaccination

Starting this season, all mentors will need to attend our virtual trauma trainings on either 2/10/22 or 2/23/22 at 6pm on Zoom. This training will focus on common types of abuse and neglect our foster and at-risk youth face/d, how to interact at outings, your role as a CA mandated reporter, and more.

Child abuse is a critical issue in the United States, where nearly 5 children die every day due to abuse and neglect. All volunteers will now need to undergo a mandated reporter training. This training requirement is met by completing the online mandated reporter training provided by the Office of Child Abuse Prevention in the State Department of Social Services. It can be found here: Volunteers | Child Abuse Mandated Reporter Training (mandatedreporterca.com). Mentors and their leaders will be required to finish this 2 hour course and submit their certification by the start of their first outing in late March.

With some of our youth having limited access to the ocean or water-based activities, we require that all mentors are educated and knowledgeable on basic water safety. Our ‘Water Safety 101’ video will be released in the end of February, with a short questionnaire that is required to be completed.

Proof of vaccination will be required to protect the health and well-being of our caregivers, youth, volunteers, and staff. Please use good judgment and do not attend an outing if you are feeling sick or have been exposed to someone who is.

These new requirements are in addition to the previous requirements of a completed application, background check, DMV record, and a copy of car insurance.

We recognize that as a committed volunteer, you dedicate many hours to serving our youth each month. We greatly appreciate your assistance in completing these new requirements.
